Central Macedonia Region allocates €7.3 million for water supply and Mount Athos monastery restorations

The Central Macedonia Region, led by Governor Athina Aidona, signed decisions to fund infrastructure projects through the EU's ESPA programme. One project, costing €2 million, will upgrade water‑supply networks in the Municipality of Therma, replacing pipelines, drilling new wells and connecting reservoirs to improve drinking‑water quality for the villages of Vasilikón, Souroti, Agia Paraskevi, Scholári and Kardia.

A separate €5.3 million programme will restore seven monasteries on Mount Athos – Karakallou, Koutloumousios, Xenophontos, Megisti Lavra, Simonopetra, Agios Pavlos and associated hermitages. Work includes structural repairs, roof replacements, utility upgrades and reinforcement of walls to preserve the historic religious complex for monks and pilgrims.

Both initiatives aim to enhance local living standards and protect cultural‑heritage sites, using European funds allocated to the region.
