Central Nagaland Tribes Council urges exam reschedule over Ahuna festival

The Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has formally requested the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) to reschedule the upcoming Combined Staff Recruitment Examination (CSRE). The council cited a conflict between the exam date and Ahuna, the primary post-harvest festival of the Sümi community.

In a statement signed by Vice-President Temjen Nungshang Kichu and Secretary Rhontsuthung Kikon, the CNTC emphasized that Ahuna is a significant cultural event celebrating indigenous heritage rather than a mere holiday. The council argued that the current schedule places candidates in a difficult position, forcing them to choose between participating in vital cultural traditions and pursuing career-defining employment opportunities.

While acknowledging the NSSB’s efforts to maintain a systematic recruitment process, the CNTC urged the board and the state government to adopt a more inclusive approach. They recommended that future examination calendars account for the major traditional festivals of Nagaland’s recognized tribes to ensure equal opportunities for all aspirants and to preserve the state’s cultural heritage.
