Central New York to witness near-total lunar eclipse

A deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible in Central New York on the night of Thursday, August 27, extending into the early morning of Friday, August 28. The event involves the Sturgeon Moon slipping into Earth's shadow, leaving only a tiny sliver untouched at its peak.

The eclipse is expected to begin at 10:33 p.m. on Thursday, reaching its maximum at approximately 12:13 a.m. on Friday. While not technically a total lunar eclipse, the moon may take on deep red, orange, or copper hues, closely resembling a ‘blood moon’ as most of the lunar surface enters the darkest part of Earth's shadow.
