Central Park adapts to climate change to mitigate New York heat

Central Park in New York City is implementing adaptation strategies to combat the effects of climate change, including heavier downpours, flooding, soil erosion, and prolonged heatwaves. The park serves as vital urban green infrastructure, helping to cool the city, clean the air, and capture stormwater. According to the Central Park Climate Lab, temperatures within the park can be approximately 5°Celsius (10°F) lower than on surrounding streets.

Preserving the park's historic landscape is a primary modern challenge. Changing weather patterns, such as unseasonably warm winters, threaten the ecosystem by causing trees like magnolias and cherry trees to bloom prematurely, leaving them vulnerable to late frosts. Yanina Kupava, a Director at the Central Park Conservancy, noted that urban parks are much more than recreation spaces, acting as essential infrastructure for urban resilience.
