Central precocious puberty case highlights early onset challenges

A woman named Gabi, now 26, has shared her experience living with Central Precocious Puberty (CPP), a condition where girls enter puberty before age eight and boys before age nine. Gabi began menstruating at age six, a situation that required extensive medical investigation as specialists initially struggled to find a cause.

Following a year of testing, including brain MRIs, Gabi was treated with GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) agonists. These hormone blockers are administered via injections every three weeks to temporarily halt the progression of puberty, allowing for more age-appropriate physical growth.

Globally, the incidence of CPP varies, affecting between 0.2 and 26 per 10,000 girls annually. Beyond the immediate physical and psychological challenges, individuals with this condition face an increased long-term risk of developing certain types of cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
