Central Railway enhances drinking water safety following CAG report
Central Railway has launched a large-scale initiative to enhance drinking water safety across its network following observations in a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). The measures include installing new filtration systems, water coolers, and monitoring arrangements at approximately 20,000 points, including stations and coaching depots.
In response to CAG concerns regarding water quality at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Bhiwandi Road, Kalyan, and Lonavala, a special testing drive was conducted. Physical, chemical, and bacteriological tests on 349 samples showed no E. coli or other bacteriological contamination. Additional maintenance included repairing leaking pipelines, cleaning storage tanks, and installing mesh on vents and overflow pipes.
Separately, South Coast Railway (SCoR) conducted a week-long drive testing water quality at 3,441 locations across its four divisions. These tests, covering stations, residential colonies, and hospitals, confirmed that all samples met safety standards for residual chlorine, bacteriological safety, and chemical parameters.
