Central Saanich Police officer's sexual assault trial delayed to 2027
The sexual assault trial for Central Saanich Police Constable Ryan Johnston has been postponed to February 2027. The delay follows a request from defense lawyers to review the admissibility of new materials.
Johnston was arrested in December 2024 following a seven-week investigation by the Vancouver Police Department. He faces one count of sexual assault related to alleged offences occurring between February and March 2020. The investigation suggested that Johnston and former Sergeant Matthew Ball formed separate, inappropriate relationships with a vulnerable woman while performing their duties.
Sgt. Ball was also charged with sexual assault and breach of trust but died by suicide one day after his arrest was announced. The trial for Johnston is now scheduled to take place from February 1 to 5, 2027.
