Central Texas prepares for heavy cricket surge this fall
Residents in Central Texas are preparing for a significant influx of crickets as autumn approaches. Pest management professionals warn that the region may experience an especially heavy emergence this season.
The severity of the surge is linked to earlier weather patterns, specifically spring rainfall, which creates ideal conditions for egg laying. As temperatures drop in late summer and early autumn, the eggs hatch, and bright city lights often draw the insects into urban areas.
To mitigate the impact, experts suggest sealing home entrances and reducing outdoor lighting. Texas A&M notes that using low-pressure sodium vapor lamps or yellow incandescent ‘bug lights’ can help keep crickets away.
