Centrale Montemartini showcases industrial and classical art in Rome

The Centrale Montemartini in Rome serves as a unique museum where industrial archaeology meets classical antiquity. Originally inaugurated in 1912 as the city's first public power plant, the facility was decommissioned in 1963 and later repurposed in 1997 as an exhibition space for the Musei Capitolini.

The museum features a striking juxtaposition of 20th-century industrial machinery—including turbines, diesel engines, and boilers—and ancient Roman artifacts. Notable exhibits include Greek statues from the 5th century B.C. and a colossal acrolith of the goddess Fortuna Huiusce Diei. The site also preserves historical elements such as the carriages of Pope Pius IX's train.
