Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent opens in restored industrial site

The Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent (CCA Tashkent) has officially opened in Uzbekistan, marking a significant development in the country’s contemporary cultural landscape. The center is housed in a restored 1912 tram depot and diesel station, the first of its kind in Central Asia. The historic industrial site was repurposed by the French architectural firm Studio KO.

Led by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, the institution aims to serve as a permanent hub for the production, discussion, and research of art. The opening is highlighted by the exhibition ‘Hikmah’ (Wisdom), curated by Dr. Sara Raza. The exhibition features new commissions and works from ten Uzbek and international artists, including Ali Cherri, Kimsooja, and Nari Ward, exploring the relationship between traditional knowledge and contemporary production.
