Centrist Reform Coalition collapses after failed three-party merger

The Centrist Reform Coalition has effectively disbanded following the formal decision by the coalition, the Constitutional Democratic Party, and Komeito to abandon plans for a three-party merger. Former Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda expressed deep regret over the failed unification, attributing the collapse to the coalition's significant defeat in the February House of Representatives election.

Despite the failure to merge, Noda emphasized that the centrist movement holds a responsibility to its voters, noting that the group secured over 10 million proportional representation votes—nearly half of what the Liberal Democratic Party received. He warned that as the LDP-led coalition moves forward with right-leaning policies, a unified centrist force will become a necessity for future political stability.

As a new organizational form, leaders are considering the creation of a unified parliamentary group consisting of former Komeito and Constitutional Democratic Party members to address key legislative issues, such as reducing consumption tax on food and cutting the number of Diet members.
