Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo hosts Chonín Navarro exhibition
The Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) is hosting an exhibition titled ‘Tejer el vacío’ at the Monasterio de la Cartuja, running until February 28. The exhibition reconstructs the artistic journey of Ascensión ‘Chonín’ Navarro Bonilla (1922–2019), a self-taught creator who utilized textile art as a primary mode of expression.
Curated by Javier Corro, the exhibition was made possible following a donation of Navarro’s works by her family. The collection aims to highlight the importance of women in contemporary art and to reclaim textile work as a legitimate artistic practice, moving it beyond the traditional labels of domesticity or simple craftsmanship.
Navarro’s career transitioned from managing a lingerie fashion business to producing complex, large-scale experimental works. The exhibition explores her evolution, including her move to San Sebastián in 1967, which provided a new cultural stimulus for her creative process.
