Centro Nazionale Trapianti issues new organ donation guidelines
The Centro Nazionale Trapianti (CNT) has approved two new sets of clinical guidelines aimed at improving the quality of organ donations and ensuring the safety of living donors. These documents were presented at the 49th National Congress of the Società Italiana dei Trapianti d’Organo e di Tessuti (SITO) in Bari.
The first document, focused on the intensive management of potential lung donors, includes 66 clinical and operational recommendations. It targets anesthesiologists, regional coordinators, and transplant professionals to help preserve lung functionality in deceased donors. By addressing issues such as hemodynamic management, infection control, and ventilation techniques, the guidelines aim to increase the utilization rate of lungs, which currently has one of the lowest usage rates among available organs.
The second document establishes multidisciplinary safety standards for living kidney donation. It focuses on creating homogeneous clinical pathways and shared criteria to protect the health of living donors throughout the entire donation process.
