Cephalonia earthquake: 4.9 magnitude tremor strikes near Ionian Islands

A significant earthquake measuring 4.8 to 4.9 on the Richter scale struck the maritime area near Cephalonia on the evening of Saturday, September 12, at 20:51. The epicenter was located approximately 21 to 31 kilometers west/southwest of Lixouri, with focal depths reported between 10 and 26 kilometers.

Following the main tremor, a series of aftershocks has been recorded in the surrounding sea zone. These smaller vibrations, ranging from 2.1 to 3.0 on the Richter scale, have been monitored by the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. No immediate reports of injuries or structural damage have been confirmed.

Seismologist Akis Tselentis noted that the seismic arc appears to be active, suggesting the possibility of further tremors in the maritime area, potentially up to 5.5 magnitude, though with expected minimal impact. Civil Protection authorities and emergency services, including the Fire Service and Coast Guard, have been placed on alert and are conducting patrols in the Ionian Islands to monitor the situation.
