Cephalonia Roman mansion to undergo €330,000 restoration

The Greek Ministry of Culture is launching a €330,000 project to protect and enhance the Roman mansion located in Agia Efimia, Cephalonia. Funded by the ‘Ionian Islands’ Regional Operational Program (ESPA 2021-2027), the initiative aims to preserve one of the island’s most significant Roman-era monuments.

The restoration work includes the construction of a protective roof, the creation of a viewing platform designed for accessibility for persons with disabilities, and the maintenance of existing stonework and geometric mosaic floors. The mansion, which dates from the 2nd to the 4th century AD, features a distinctive ‘U-shaped’ layout with an atrium, walls, a reservoir, a well, and remains of a bath facility.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni stated that the project will ensure the monument’s structural stability and make the archaeological site safe, functional, and accessible to all visitors. The site was originally excavated in the late 1950s by Vassilios Kallipolitis, with subsequent excavations resuming in 2000.
