Ceramic tableware care: methods for cleaning and preservation
Maintaining ceramic and porcelain tableware requires specific cleaning and storage techniques to prevent scratches, cracks, and stains. For tea-stained cups, effective methods include using a bicarbonate soda paste for light deposits, a percarbonate soak for ingrained marks, or a lemon and salt combination for stubborn residue on light-colored surfaces.
When cleaning ceramics, the suitability of a dishwasher depends on the material. Stoneware and porcelain are generally dishwasher-safe due to their density, whereas more porous earthenware (faïence) is susceptible to thermal shock and is better suited for hand washing. Items with painted or gold patterns should always be hand-washed to avoid dulling the decor.
To prevent physical damage, avoid using abrasive sponges like steel wool, which can irreversibly scratch enamel. To prevent cracks, avoid thermal shock by never placing hot dishes directly under cold water. For organized storage, placing felt, cardboard, or paper towels between plates can prevent scratches, and avoiding over-stacking prevents weight-related fragility.
