Cereal markets see rising corn and wheat prices
Cereal markets are seeing price increases for corn and soft wheat, driven by adverse weather conditions and renewed tensions in the Black Sea region. According to a monthly analysis by BMTI, corn prices rose by 1.7% in July due to heatwaves across major European production areas, which have raised concerns regarding lower average yields per hectare.
In Italy, water stress is a significant concern. The International Grains Council estimates Italian production at approximately 5 million tons, representing a decrease of 500,000 tons compared to 2025. Despite this, current prices remain 6.6% lower than last year.
Soft wheat prices in Europe and Italy rose by 1.3% in July, supported by logistical infrastructure attacks in the Black Sea affecting Russian and Ukrainian exports. Meanwhile, durum wheat prices in Southern Italy remained stable at approximately €265/t, which is 12% lower than the previous year.
