Ceres Fruit Growers manages weather volatility in South Africa

Ceres Fruit Growers, which represents over 40 growers and holds a 50% stake in Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, is navigating highly variable growing conditions in South Africa. The region experienced extreme weather fluctuations, including 488 mm of rainfall in Ceres between May 10 and 13, which caused significant infrastructure damage and limited electricity access for seven weeks. This was followed by a very dry winter.

While agricultural reservoirs are currently full, the volatility between heavy flooding and below-average rainfall remains a concern. Technical advisor De Kock Hamman noted that while early varieties are showing signs of life, an early season can lead to challenges with fruit size and market timing in Europe.

The company is currently finishing the Pink Lady packaging season, primarily targeting Europe and the United Kingdom, before shifting focus to Cripps Red, Fuji for the Far East, and Golden Delicious varieties.
