Ceriale crash kills 23-year-old and sparks viral social‑media backlash
A traffic collision on the Aurelia road in Ceriale, Italy, on the night of June 21‑22 resulted in the death of 23‑year‑old Sofia Barberi and left her friend seriously injured, requiring foot amputation. The crash involved a Fiat 500 driven by a young woman who collided with a scooter carrying the two girls.
A 19‑year‑old male of foreign origin, who was present at the scene, recorded and posted a series of videos that mocked the incident and later posted a further reel from Malpensa airport as he prepared to leave Italy. His remarks, including “my plan to have a nice life in Italy has failed,” provoked public outrage. He subsequently issued an apology, acknowledging he was drunk and had not grasped the gravity of the situation.
The Savona prosecutor has ordered an autopsy on the deceased and is preparing for the funeral. The young driver has not been formally charged at this stage, but the incident continues to dominate Italian social‑media discussion.
