Cerignola ATM bombings spark wave of attacks in Puglia

A group of armed assailants detonated two explosives at a Banca Popolare di Milano ATM in the centre of Cerignola, Foggia province, waking residents with two loud blasts. Police say the attackers used the "marmotta" technique – inserting metal‑filled explosive devices into the machine – and fled in an SUV. Carabinieri are reviewing video footage and have launched an investigation.

In the same night, similar assaults were reported in the Salento area: a UniCredit ATM in Lecce and a post‑office cash terminal in Scorrano were also blown up, with the perpetrators using an Alfa Romeo Giulietta and a van. No injuries were reported, but the machines suffered extensive damage.

The incidents add to a growing pattern of ATM attacks in Puglia, with at least fifteen assaults recorded in the province since the start of 2026. Earlier this week, Carabinieri arrested seven suspects linked to two out‑of‑region ATM robberies, but the crime wave continues, threatening local banking services and public safety.
