Cerignola Mayor Francesco Bonito announces he will not seek re-election

Francesco Bonito, the Mayor of Cerignola, has officially announced that he will not seek a second term in the upcoming municipal elections. Bonito stated that it is time to entrust local government to a new generation, fulfilling a promise made at the start of his mandate.

His announcement has triggered political friction within the city. Bonito criticized the current political landscape, labeling civic movements as the “worst expression of politics” and condemning “political opportunists.” In response, local politician Tommaso Sgarro criticized the timing of the Mayor's announcement, noting it coincided with recent criminal activity involving ATM robberies in the city.

Local security remains a pressing issue in Cerignola. Antonio Bonavita, the local Lega secretary, expressed concern over rising crime, including assaults on cashiers and ATMs, even during recent patronal festivals. He criticized the current administration for failing to provide 24-hour police coverage to support existing law enforcement agencies.
