CERN researchers successfully transport antiprotons via truck
Researchers from the BASE Collaboration have successfully demonstrated the ability to transport antiprotons via truck, marking a significant milestone in antimatter research. The experiment, conducted at CERN in Geneva, involved moving 92 antiprotons inside a specialized mobile Penning trap known as BASE-STEP over a distance of 7.5 kilometers.
According to findings published in the journal Nature, the antiprotons were successfully stored in the mobile container for over a month without any loss. This capability is intended to allow physicists to move antimatter from the CERN Antimatter Factory to quieter, more stable laboratory environments. This move is necessary because the magnetic field fluctuations caused by the operation of the factory can limit the precision of measurements.
By comparing the properties of protons with their antimatter counterparts, such as mass and magnetic moment, scientists hope to uncover why the observable universe is composed almost entirely of matter despite the simultaneous creation of antimatter during the Big Bang.
