Cernavodă cooling project blocked by environmental NGOs, claims Senator
Senator Radu Oprea has claimed that environmental NGOs have blocked a critical restoration project for the Bala branch of the Danube. The project was intended to ensure a sufficient water supply for cooling the Cernavodă nuclear power plant.
According to Oprea, although the government had approved the project and submitted it to the European Commission for funding in 2024, intervention by NGOs led to demands for a completely new feasibility study. This requirement has resulted in the project being stalled. The delay comes at a time when the Cernavodă plant has recently undergone controlled shutdowns of its reactors.
