Cernavodă nuclear plant shutdown leaves Romania without nuclear power

Romania's nuclear power generation has dropped to zero following the shutdown of both reactors at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant. The shutdown of Unit 2 was completed on August 13, after Unit 1 was taken offline in late July. Both outages were caused by record-low water levels in the Danube, which threatened the availability of necessary cooling water.

Despite the loss of these reactors, which typically provide approximately 20 percent of the nation's electricity, the Ministry of Energy stated that Romania has sufficient domestic generation and import capacity to meet electricity demand. To compensate for the deficit, the government has brought additional thermal power online, including coal-fired generation from Rovinari Group 4 and the Paroșeni reserve group.

While electricity availability is expected to remain stable, officials warn that consumer prices may see a slight increase due to the higher costs associated with electricity imports and alternative production methods. The government has declared an energy emergency for August and remains prepared to intervene in energy markets to prevent speculative trading. Additionally, political discussions have highlighted long-term vulnerabilities in the national grid, specifically regarding a one-to-two-year delay in developing energy storage infrastructure.
