Cernavoda nuclear plant cooling supply secured via emergency Danube water measures
Romania is implementing emergency measures to ensure the cooling water supply for the Cernavoda nuclear power plant due to critically low water levels in the Danube. The Romanian government has announced immediate works to build a new threshold in the Old Danube bed to divert water toward the plant and the Danube-Black Sea Canal. Additionally, the state-owned company Hidroelectrica will release 50 cubic meters of surplus water per second from the Olt river reservoirs over a five-day period to bolster the Danube's flow and mitigate energy shortages.
While the Danube's flow at the Romanian border is projected to increase to approximately 1,600 cubic meters per second by August 31, this remains significantly below the multi-annual August average of 3,900 cubic meters per second. Nuclearelectrica has confirmed that both reactors at the Cernavoda plant are currently in a safe shutdown state and are being maintained within safety parameters. The company stated that decisions regarding the reconnection of the units to the National Energy System will depend on the evolution of hydrological forecasts.
