Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant units in safe shutdown due to low Danube levels

Units 1 and 2 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant are currently in a safe shutdown state due to extremely low water levels in the Danube River. Societatea Națională Nuclearelectrica S.A. (SNN) has stated that the shutdown poses no risk to nuclear security, as the plant utilizes redundant cooling systems and specialized teams to maintain safety protocols.

The shutdown is expected to continue until hydrological conditions allow for the safe resumption of operations. During this period, the operator is utilizing the controlled downtime to conduct maintenance activities and enhance plant resilience.

The outage has significant implications for Romania's energy sector. The National Energy System is currently missing approximately 20% of the continuous electricity production typically provided by the Cernavoda plant, an absence of roughly 1,300 MW. Officials have noted that this situation may increase pressure on the electricity market and impact prices.
