CERN's First Website Marks 35 Years Online

The web page at info.cern.ch, created by British computer scientist Tim Berners‑Lee while working at CERN in 1991, is still accessible on the internet. It celebrates its 35th anniversary on 6 August 2026. The site was a simple static page that explained the World Wide Web and showed how anyone could create their own pages.

Hosted on a NeXT computer at CERN, the page also served as the first web server and introduced the core technologies that still underpin the internet – HTML, HTTP and URL addressing. Berners‑Lee’s original goal was to let researchers in different countries share information and documents more easily, a purpose that has since expanded to billions of users worldwide.
