Cerrejón railway suffers explosive attack and derailment in La Guajira
An explosive attack targeted the Cerrejón railway infrastructure in Uribia, La Guajira, on the night of Tuesday, September 22. The blast occurred near kilometer 60, causing a train traveling empty toward the south to derail. While reports vary on the exact extent of the damage, some sources indicate that approximately 20 wagons were affected, with at least four platforms collapsing.
No injuries or fatalities were reported, as company personnel were evacuated from the area as a preventive measure. The Colombian National Army has deployed troops, including units from the Tenth Brigade, to secure the perimeter, conduct demining operations, and protect the critical infrastructure.
This incident marks the sixth attack against Cerrejón’s railway infrastructure in 2026. While no group has officially claimed responsibility, regional authorities have suggested the ELN may be involved, though investigations are ongoing. The company has temporarily suspended railway operations pending a technical damage assessment once security conditions allow.
