Cerro del Gollino excavations reveal Carpetani elite residence
The third excavation campaign at Cerro del Gollino in Corral de Almaguer has yielded significant findings regarding the Carpetani societies of the late Second Iron Age. Led by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and the University of Oxford, the 2026 works focused on 'Edificio B', a large-scale structure believed to be a residence for local elites.
Archaeologists recovered an extensive collection of materials, including high-quality local pottery and imported ceramics from various points across the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean. These discoveries provide insight into the lifestyles of ruling groups and demonstrate their integration into existing economic and cultural exchange networks.
Cerro del Gollino is an 18-hectare fortified settlement (oppidum) that was occupied between the late 3rd century BC and the first half of the 1st century BC. The current research project, supported by the Diputación de Toledo, aims to combine scientific investigation with heritage recovery and academic training.
