Cerzeto festival commemorates Cutro shipwreck victims

During the 15th edition of the Festival delle Migrazioni in Cerzeto, participants held a meeting titled ‘Cutro, una ferita aperta’ to commemorate the victims of the Steccato di Cutro shipwreck. The event focused on the memory of the 94 people who died when the caicco Summer Love sank off the coast of Calabria on February 26, 2023.

The gathering brought together journalists, sea rescue workers, and civil society representatives to discuss the human, social, and institutional consequences of the tragedy. Speakers, including Cerzeto Mayor Silvio Cascardo and journalist Francesco Donnici, emphasized the need for continued public discourse and the pursuit of truth regarding the circumstances of the shipwreck.

Giuseppe Pipita, director of Il Crotonese, addressed the ongoing judicial proceedings and raised questions concerning the coordination between state agencies and the management of the vessel prior to the disaster. The community also highlighted its efforts in welcoming survivors and the creation of a monument dedicated to the victims.
