Latin American regional security and resource negotiations advance
Several regional developments are underway across Latin America and the Caribbean involving security, disaster management, and resource negotiations.
In Panama, First Quantum Minerals has expressed willingness to negotiate ‘in good faith’ with the government regarding a new legal framework for the Cobre Panama mine. This follows a government commission's recommendation for an ‘orderly closure’ of the facility, which has been halted since a Supreme Court ruling in 2023.
Regional cooperation is also advancing through security and disaster response initiatives. In Montevideo, Uruguay, officials met to discuss border intelligence and the MERCOSUR Security Information Exchange System (SISME) to combat organized crime and drug trafficking. Meanwhile, in Panama City, representatives from Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic participated in a regional workshop organized by CEPREDENAC and the IFRC to harmonize disaster preparedness and response methodologies.
In the Dominican Republic, the Specialized Body for Airport Security and Civil Aviation (CESAC) successfully completed an ISO 9001:2015 follow-up audit with full compliance. Additionally, the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) reported significant modernization in the sector, including the installation of new meteorological radar technology and a modern control tower at the San Isidro Air Base.
