Cesan fined R$ 37.8 million for sewage irregularities in Vitória

The City of Vitória has fined the Companhia Espírito-Santense de Saneamento (Cesan) R$ 37.8 million following inspections that revealed irregularities in the sewage network. The issues were identified in the Praia do Canto, Santa Helena, and Enseada do Suá neighborhoods.

Municipal inspectors found 17 irregular connection points between the sewage and storm drainage networks, as well as 38 properties making clandestine connections to discharge sewage directly into the rainwater system. The city has proposed converting the fine into sanitation actions, including network inspections, connection corrections, and pipe recovery.

Cesan has stated it will file an administrative appeal and denied any link between the sewage network and a dark patch observed in the sea. Meanwhile, the Public Ministry of Espírito Santo is seeking clarifications from several entities, including Cesan and environmental agencies, regarding the reappearance of the patch in Vitória Bay.
