César Azpilicueta retires from football after career at Chelsea and Sevilla

Former Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta has confirmed his retirement from professional football following his final season with Sevilla. The 37-year-old Spaniard expressed a need for a break from the professional routine to focus on family and personal interests before deciding on any future roles in the sport.

Azpilicueta, who made 508 appearances for Chelsea and captained them to the 2021 Champions League title, emphasized the importance of education throughout his career. He holds qualifications from Harvard Business School and the Berlin School of Business and Innovation, where he studied for an MBA. Most notably, he used his studies to manage pressure during the 2021 Champions League final in Porto when he was unable to take his usual pre-match nap.

While he has not yet committed to a specific career path, Azpilicueta recently received a diploma in global football sport directorship from the PFA Business School. When asked about potentially becoming a sporting director, he left the possibility open, stating “maybe,” but reiterated the need for a period of rest first.
