Cesargrad fortress unveils sculpture of peasant Martin Klanječki
A sculpture of the peasant Martin Klanječki was officially unveiled at the Cesargrad fortress on October 4, 2026. The monument, created by sculptor Petar Popijač, commemorates the peasants who fought for justice during the Peasant Revolt of 1573, an uprising that saw the capture of the Cesargrad fortress under the leadership of Ilija Gregorić.
Financed by Krapinsko-zagorska County, the project involved the public institution ‘Zagorje zeleno’ to enhance the cultural offerings of the protected area. During the ceremony, County Prefect Željko Kolar noted that the sculpture serves as a tribute to the historical character and resilience of the local people. Katarina Skrbinac, Vice President of HPD Cesargrad Klanjec, highlighted the historical significance of the site, noting that the revolt actually began in the Sutla valley rather than Stubica.
