CESM seeks dialogue over new processional music copyright model
The Spanish Confederation of Musical Societies (CESM) has requested institutional meetings with SGAE and MUSAPRO following the announcement of a new copyright management model for processional music. CESM seeks to understand the scope of the proposed model and ensure that musical societies are included in negotiations that could impact their economic sustainability and contracting conditions.
SGAE has approved a tariff equivalent to 7% of contracts with bands for processions where protected works are performed. This measure, intended for implementation by Holy Week 2027, aims to remunerate composers and encourage the creation of new musical pieces. While composers support the recognition of their work, there is uncertainty regarding how payments will be processed and whether the calculation will be based on the total music budget.
In Córdoba, local musical groups and brotherhoods are monitoring the situation with caution. While there is general agreement that composers deserve remuneration, stakeholders are calling for transparency in how funds are distributed and clarity on whether the responsibility for payment lies with the brotherhoods, city councils, or other organizing entities.
