Cetinje gathering marks anniversary of Belvedere events

A gathering titled ‘National Unity and Solidarity – Our Imperative’ was held in Cetinje to mark the fifth anniversary of the events at Belvedere. The event, organized by the Center for Civil Rights, commemorated the period surrounding the enthronement of Metropolitan Joanikije of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Speakers at the event addressed the social and political tensions that occurred in September 2021. Participants noted that the state apparatus was used to facilitate the religious ceremony, leading to clashes and injuries among citizens. Dr. Aleksandar Mugoša reported treating 25 injured individuals during the unrest, including children.

Political analyst Alek Barović commented that the events demonstrated the significant influence of the Serbian Orthodox Church within Montenegro. He emphasized the need for national unity and a strategic plan for national survival, warning against the divisions currently appearing in Montenegrin society.
