Ceuta migrants establish improvised camp at Playa del Trampolín

Approximately 1,500 migrants have established an improvised camp at Playa del Trampolín in Ceuta, Spain. The settlement has formed due to the oversaturation of the Centro de Estancia Temporal de Inmigrantes (CETI). The population is diverse, though 80% are from sub-Saharan Africa, including groups of Senegalese and Sudanese migrants. To cope with the living conditions, migrants have constructed roughly 20 makeshift huts using cane, branches, plastic, and fabric.

Internal community initiatives have emerged to manage the site, including a group of approximately 150 Sudanese migrants who have organized to assist with waste collection and maintain cleanliness.

This crisis follows a mass arrival of people swimming from Morocco to Ceuta on July 30. Since that event, Spanish authorities have recovered 83 bodies in the area. In response to the scale of the casualties, the judicial and forensic effort in Ceuta has been reinforced, increasing the forensic team from seven to 19 professionals to assist with identification and autopsies.
