Ceuta dolphin death sparks outrage and investigation

A dolphin calf was found dead at Trampolin Beach in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, following a disturbing incident involving a group of migrants. Video footage circulating online shows several men handling the young bottlenose dolphin, with some witnesses alleging that the animal was pulled from the water and struck in the head with a stick.

The environmental association DAUBMA has filed a formal complaint with the Spanish Civil Guard, requesting an investigation to identify those responsible. DAUBMA reported that the calf appeared disoriented and alive when it reached the shore, but showed signs of injury, including bleeding near one eye, after being handled. While some footage shows the animal being returned to the sea, witnesses claim it was already unresponsive.

The incident has intensified local tensions in Ceuta, where thousands of migrants from Morocco have been staying following a massive border surge in late July. Local residents have held demonstrations protesting the migrant presence, and some have called for the prosecution and expulsion of those involved in the animal's death. In response to the situation, the animal rights party PACMA has urged the Spanish government to provide migrants with regular access to food and water as a preventive measure to mitigate such incidents.
