Ceuta cleaning workers report strain due to increased waste
The Independent Workers' Union (SITA) has reported that street cleaning and urban solid waste operators in Ceuta are working ‘at the limit’ due to increased service demands following a mass arrival of migrants to the city.
SITA, representing workers at the municipal environmental company Servilimpce, is calling for an ‘urgent reinforcement’ of staff to cover all districts and ensure adequate conditions for both workers and the public. The union notes that workdays are being extended because current personnel cannot meet the increased needs.
Specific issues cited include individuals searching through containers and scattering waste, necessitating additional cleanup efforts. The union highlighted the Trampolín beach area, which reportedly faces daily accumulations of waste and excrement, posing hygienic risks and occupational hazards. SITA has requested personal protective equipment (PPE) and urged the company to utilize existing job pools to expand resources.
