Spain proposes energy windfall tax and fuel relief measures

Spain's First Vice President and Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, is advancing new economic measures to mitigate the impact of rising fuel and energy prices caused by the conflict in Iran. During meetings with social agents, including unions and business organizations like CEOE, the government discussed plans to support families and critical sectors such as transport and agriculture.

In a meeting of EU finance ministers in Dublin, Cuerpo also called on the European Commission to investigate whether energy companies are earning extraordinary profits due to the Middle East conflict. This investigation would serve as a precursor to implementing a European windfall tax, a move supported by Spain and five other nations, to fund relief for households and businesses.

Additionally, Cuerpo advocated for a global discussion regarding the regulation of artificial intelligence and the potential establishment of an international supervisory agency.
