Ceuta experiences emergence of informal migrant economy

In the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, a distinct informal economy has emerged among migrants, locally referred to as ‘caminantes’ (walkers). Residents report that many migrants carry Moroccan dirhams, which they attempt to exchange for euros at unfavorable rates.

Local businesses, particularly supermarkets, have seen significant changes in logistics and security. While some reports indicate an increase in theft, retailers also note higher overall sales. Supermarkets have doubled their daily supply requirements to meet demand, and many customers now use mobile payment methods.

To maintain order and provide a sense of security to regular customers, supermarkets have increased private security and deployed the military to provide a visible presence. Observers note that migrants have adapted their behavior, moving in smaller, more organized groups to complete purchases through official checkout lines.
