Ceuta migrant influx fuels EU border tensions, BP sells North Sea assets

An influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has prompted a sharp reaction across the European Union. France announced tighter controls on its border with Spain, while Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani called for the Schengen area to be closed to Spain, a stance backed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Finland’s interior minister Mari Rantanen also urged tougher measures, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the situation as “unacceptable” and called for rapid returns of migrants under EU rules.

In parallel, British energy group BP disclosed plans to divest its oil and gas operations in the North Sea, ending more than six decades of activity in the region. The sale marks a strategic withdrawal from a long‑standing asset base.
