Ceuta migrant influx triggers EU emergency interior ministers meeting FAST-MOVING
Around 50,000‑60,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco in a single day, with at least 67 deaths recorded. Spanish forces regained control within 24‑48 hours and most migrants were returned to Morocco. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez sent a letter to EU leaders demanding an urgent, extraordinary meeting of interior ministers. The EU, under the Irish rotating Council presidency, scheduled a video‑conference for the following Tuesday, to be chaired by Ireland’s Minister for Justice and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan. Twenty‑two EU governments signed a joint letter urging a coordinated response, stronger Frontex powers and tighter border controls; Italy and Denmark have also called for a temporary suspension of Spain from the Schengen area and reinstated sea and air border checks. King Felipe VI expressed “great concern and indignation” over the events in Ceuta and Melilla, urging the state to ensure their security and prevent a recurrence. The crisis also halted commercial activity in Ceuta, prompting local authorities to seek compensation for affected businesses.
