Ceuta migration alert: Authorities brace for mass attempts amid disinformation surge

Spanish authorities are on high alert following credible intelligence regarding social media calls for a mass migration attempt in Ceuta. Online posts on platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and TikTok have urged migrants to bypass land border controls by swimming around the Tarajal breakwater, with some calls targeting mid-August.

This mobilization follows a previous crisis in late July where an estimated 72,000 migrants attempted to enter the Spanish enclave, resulting in significant tension and approximately 141 deaths during crossing attempts. Spanish security forces are coordinating with Moroccan authorities to prepare for various scenarios to prevent a recurrence of the July events.

Concurrent with the migration threat, disinformation experts have identified a coordinated surge in far-right narratives. Analysis by the group 411 indicates that accounts with links to the Russian military reached over 500,000 people, spreading narratives that characterized the migration as a coordinated "assault" and suggesting complicity by authorities. These posts, often containing Islamophobic or antisemitic conspiracy theories, were reproduced in seven languages and garnered hundreds of thousands of views shortly after the initial surge in Ceuta.
