Migrant dies in paraglider attempts to reach Spanish enclaves Ceuta and Sebta
A sub‑Saharan migrant died after his paraglider lost control and fell into the sea while trying to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. The incident occurred near the Benzú jetty around 08:00, and the Spanish Guardia Civil’s maritime service recovered the body and transferred it to the forensic service for autopsy. Authorities opened an investigation, noting it is the first recorded fatality in Spain from a parachuting entry attempt.
In a separate but similar case, a young migrant attempting to reach the Spanish enclave of Sebta by glider also lost control and fell into the water, where he was found dead by the Spanish civil guard. This is the first death recorded in Sebta involving a glider crossing. Both incidents highlight a growing trend of irregular migrants using aerial devices to bypass fortified borders, prompting Spanish security forces to increase monitoring and response capabilities.
The deaths underscore the dangers of unconventional migration methods and have prompted calls for tighter border security in the North‑African enclaves.
