Ceuta migration crisis fuels Catalan separatist rhetoric

Activist group Poble Lliure recovered a 1986 poster from the Moviment en Defensa de la Terra (MDT) and linked its message to the current humanitarian emergency in Ceuta, condemning the policies of Spain, Morocco and the European Union. The organization argues that the migration flows across the Mediterranean are driven by broader geopolitical, economic and colonial dynamics.

Catalan separatist leaders responded by portraying the situation as an opportunity to revive independence claims. Carles Puigdemont warned of a massive influx of migrants that could burden Spain and the EU, urging the delegation of immigration powers to Catalonia. Oriol Junqueras and spokesperson Miriam Nogueras echoed similar criticism of the Spanish state, describing it as a “failed state” unable to protect its borders and suggesting Catalonia could act as a new European frontier.

Both sets of statements frame the Ceuta crisis as a symptom of larger regional tensions involving Spain, Morocco and EU migration policy.
