Ceuta migration crisis sparks political conflict and military ambush

The migration crisis in Ceuta has triggered intense political conflict within the Spanish government and parliament. Following the arrival of approximately 70,000 to 72,000 migrants from Morocco in late July, ministers Margarita Robles and Fernando Grande-Marlaska have provided conflicting accounts regarding government preparedness. Defense Minister Robles asserted that the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) issued a warning on July 30, while Interior Minister Grande-Marlaska maintained that the government lacked sufficient information to predict the sudden influx.

In the Spanish Congress, opposition parties PP and Vox have criticized the administration. Vox members accused the government of protecting Moroccan interests, while the PP criticized the lack of self-criticism and the perceived abandonment of Ceuta's residents.

On the ground in Ceuta, tensions have escalated into violence. Twelve migrants were recently detained following an ambush in the Benzú neighborhood, where individuals used stones and knives to attack a military vehicle. Military associations have condemned the incident, citing a lack of operational security and criticizing the Ministry of Defense for failing to act on previous warnings regarding the high-risk environment.
