Ceuta migration crisis triggers social media crackdown on misinformation

A mass migration event at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, bordering Morocco, has resulted in approximately 70,000 people attempting to cross the border in a few days, with nearly 100 deaths reported during the attempts. The surge was driven in part by viral misinformation on social media platforms, which falsely suggested that entering the European Union through this crossing was easy.

In response, Meta and TikTok have activated crisis protocols in coordination with the European Commission. These measures involve using local fact-checkers to identify and limit the spread of harmful content and false claims regarding migration routes. While this collaboration is currently voluntary, European authorities are evaluating whether to invoke further regulatory tools under the Digital Services Act to manage such digital threats.
