Morocco reports 40,000 migrants attempt crossing to Ceuta, 11 dead
Morocco’s Ministry of Interior said about 40,000 people tried to cross the border into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and roughly 1,135 attempted the crossing to Melilla. All migrants who reached Melilla were returned promptly. The surge resulted in 11 deaths – one accidental fall near Ceuta and ten drownings at sea.
The ministry attributed the wave to coordinated digital misinformation, human‑trafficking networks and misinterpretations of recent Spanish court rulings that limit the immediate return of intercepted migrants. The short distance between the two coasts – less than 70 metres with water depths often under two metres – created a false perception of an easy crossing. Moroccan authorities said the figures are based on monitoring and tracking systems and are coordinating with Spanish counterparts.
Spanish courts have recently restricted the immediate repatriation of certain irregular migrants intercepted at sea, a legal change that was widely misrepresented online and encouraged many to attempt the swim.
