Ceuta migrant settlements cleared amid allegations of forced returns
Spanish authorities have conducted operations to dismantle migrant settlements at the Benítez and El Trampolín beaches in Ceuta. Following these evacuations, the Spanish government reports that approximately 11,000 migrants have returned to Morocco since August 10, characterizing many departures as voluntary.
However, several Moroccan migrants have challenged this narrative, alleging they were coerced into returning. Testimonies provided to Cadena SER suggest that individuals were told they were being moved to shelters, only to be transported by bus to the Tarajal border and ordered to leave by police.
The cleanup of the beaches has also addressed environmental concerns, as recent analyses detected high levels of E. coli and intestinal enterococci in the waters of Trampolín beach, posing health risks. Meanwhile, local residents have established a protest camp in Plaza de los Reyes to express dissatisfaction with the handling of the migrant crisis and the impact on the city.
